A 24 year old from Russell County, he mustered as Private, Company I, 37th Virginia Infantry on 2 May 1861 in New Garden, VA. He was promoted to 3rd Sergeant on 15 August 1861, and commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 17 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

After the War

A marker for him was placed in the John Barrett Cemetery, Russell, Russell County, VA in 1997.
