An 18 year old farmer in Washington County, he mustered as Private, Company H, 37th Virginia Infantry on 22 July 1861 in Abingdon, VA. He reenlisted in February 1862 and got a 30 day furlough, returning to duty in March 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
