Before Sharpsburg

From Washington County, he mustered as Private, Company A, 37th Virginia Infantry on 20 April 1861 in Goodson (now Bristol), VA. He was promoted to Sergeant in July 1861. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in February 1862, First Lieutenant in April 1862, and absent sick in May 1862. He returned to duty in June and was appointed Captain on 27 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
