Before Sharpsburg
From Amelia County, he mustered as 3rd Sergeant, Company C, 23rd Virginia Infantry on 15 May 1861 in Winterham, VA. He reenlisted on 13 February 1862 and received a 30 day furlough. He was reduced in rank to Private on 1 June 1862 and was reported absent without leave in July. He returned to duty in August 1862.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
