He mustered as Private in Company C, 27th Virginia Infantry on 10 March 1862 in Jackson's River, VA. He was captured at Harpers Ferry, VA on 31 May 1862 and held at Fort Delaware until exchanged on 5 August 1862, when he returned to duty.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
