Age 22, from Augusta County, he mustered as Private, Company L, 5th Virginia Infantry on 17 April 1861 at Staunton, VA. He was wounded at 2nd Manassas on 28 August 1862.

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and died the same day.
