Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 22 year old worker on his parent's rented farm at Philippi in Barbour County, VA. He enlisted and mustered as a Private in Company H, 31st Virginia Infantry on 3 October 1861 at Camp Greenbriar, VA (now WV). He was appointed Corporal and color bearer, date not given.
On the Campaign
He was killed "by an exploding shell" in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
