Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted in Austin as a Private in Company B, 4th Texas Infantry on 15 March 1862.
On the Campaign
He was in action with his Company at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and was captured at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was paroled at Sharpsburg on 21 September He was back with his Company by November 1862, but sick in Richmond in February and March 1863. He was sick again in May and June and furloughed home to Austin for 30 days on 6 July. When he didn't return in August 1863 he was listed as absent without leave. He was paroled in Austin on 27 July 1865.
After the War
He was night watchman at the State Capitol in Austin "for many years."
