Before Sharpsburg
A 20 year old clerk in Frederickburg, he mustered as Private, Company K, 30th Virginia Infantry on 20 May 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant on 18 October 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the wrist in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 14 October 1862. He deserted on 4 February 1865, took the oath of allegiance to the United States on 6 February, and was given transportation to Cincinnati, OH.
