In 1860 he was a 24 year old on his widowed mother Martha's modest farm in Orange County, NC. He was conscripted at Durham on 15 July 1862, and mustered as a Private in Company F, First North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
