In 1860 he was a 32 year old farmer on his widowed mother's place at Rolesville in Wake County, NC. He enlisted in Forestville on 26 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company I, First North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His mother Nancy filed for his final pay in September 1863.
