Before Sharpsburg

Age 37, from Perquimans County, he enlisted on on 18 May 1861 at Edenton, NC, and mustered as Corporal, Company A, First North Carolina Infantry. He was 3rd Sergeant by July and 2nd Sergeant by December 1861 (though paid as a Corporal to April 1862). He was wounded in action at Ellerson's Mill (Mechanicsville), VA on 26 June 1862. He was probably appointed 3rd Lieutenant by September 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
