Age 16, from Northampton County, he mustered as Private, Company F, First North Carolina Infantry on 15 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He lost both legs to amputation and did not return to duty.

After the War

He "secured a position" with the Seaboard Railroad, later the Seaboard Air Line, at Franklin, VA, married there and left a widow and several children when he died (before 1895).
