Age 19, he mustered as Private, Company A, First North Carolina Infantry on 18 May 1861. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 18 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 6 November 1862, but died of wounds in a hospital in Winchester, VA on 17 January 1863.
