Age 21, from Craven County, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company F, 2nd North Carolina Infantry on 16 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was paroled on 17 September but died of wounds on 20 September 1862. He was promoted posthumously to First Lieutenant on 21 October 1862.
