Son of a gold miner at Salisbury in Rowan County, in 1860 he was a 14 year old student. He enlisted in Salisbury as a Private in Company K, 4th North Carolina Infantry on 22 September 1861; the clerk recoded his age as 20 and his last name as "McDonnald."

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862. He was 15 or 16 years old.

The rest of the War

His father William J. McDaniel filed a claim for his son's final pay in November 1862. It came to C$169.23.
