Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 25 year old apprentice to master carpenter Robert McLean at Rockingham in Richmond County, NC. He mustered as a Private in Company A, 4th North Carolina Infantry on 29 May 1861 in Brunswick County and was promoted to Corporal on 31 December 1861.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
