In 1860 he was a 25 year old farm worker at Salisbury in Rowan County, NC. He enlisted there as a Private in Company K, 4th North Carolina Infantry on 26 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds at Sharpsburg on 19 September 1862. His widow Levina filed for his final pay on 26 January 1863; it came to $169.96.
