Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 21 year old farmer in Iredell County, NC and he enlisted as a Private in Company A, 42nd North Carolina Volunteers on 15 April 1861 at Statesville. His Company became "A" of the 4th North Carolina Infantry on 27 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and captured there.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds, probably in a US Army field hospital, on 3 October 1862.
