Before Sharpsburg

A 27 year old merchant in Gates County, he mustered as Sergeant, Company B, 5th North Carolina Infantry on 12 June 1861 in Halifax County. He was appointed Sergeant Major of the regiment on 10 April 1862. He was wounded and captured at Williamsburg, VA on 5 May 1862 and held at the Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC by 11 July 1862. He was exchanged by the end of July to return to duty. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company G on 15 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
