A 23 year old farmer in Mecklenburg County, he mustered as Private, Company B, 13th North Carolina Infantry on 17 July 1861 in Mecklenburg County. He was wounded at Williamsburg, VA on 5 May 1862 and returned to duty in July.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
