A 28 year old tobacconist in Rockingham County, NC, he enlisted at Wentworth, NC on 10 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company H, 13th North Carolina Infantry on 18 May Garysville, NC. He was promoted to Sergeant on 6 November 1861 and commissioned 3rd Lieutenant on 26 April 1862.

On the Campaign

"Lieutenant [J. C.] Joyce, commanding Company H, led his men into action bravely and coolly, but was killed by the very first fire" in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
