An 18 year old student in Caswell County, he mustered as Corporal, Company A, 13th North Carolina Infantry on 29 April 1861 in Caswell County. He was reduced in rank to Private on 26 April 1862.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
