A 26 year old laborer in Rockingham County, he mustered as Private, Company I, 13th North Carolina Infantry on 3 May 1861 in Rockingham County. He was promoted to Corporal on 15 April 1862 and to Sergeant on about 1 July.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
