Before Sharpsburg
A carpenter's son, in 1860 he was a 23 year old laborer living next door to his parents near Charlotte in Mecklenburg County, NC. He enlisted in Harralsburg, NC on 3 April 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B, 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 13 May in Raleigh. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 28 September and was furloughed home on 9 (or 19) November. He died at home in Mecklenburg County, NC on Christmas Day 1862.
His widow filed a claim for his final pay of $184.69 in August 1863.
