Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 29 year old farmer at Yanceyville in Caswell County, NC. He enlisted on 10 August 1861 at Camp Ruffin, VA and mustered on 31 August as a Private in Company A, 13th North Carolina Infantry. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 26 April 1862 during the army reorganization.

On the Campaign

He "behaved with great coolness and courage" in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 but was killed at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
