Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 19 year old farmer living with his parents, 3 younger siblings, and at least 18 slaves (he owned 10 of them) on their plantation at Tarboro in Edgecombe County, NC. He enlisted there on 8 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company G of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry at Garysburg, NC on 16 May. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861. He was promoted to Corporal on 25 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
