An 18 year old farmer in Warren County, he mustered as Private, Company A, 14th North Carolina Infantry on 30 March 1861 in Warren County. He was promoted to Sergeant on 25 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action in the Sunken Road at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862: his musket had misfired and when he raised up slightly to clear the jammed barrel, he was shot through the head.
