Before Sharpsburg

A 19 year old farmer in Davidson County, he mustered as Sergeant, Company B, 14th North Carolina Infantry on 23 April 1861 in Davidson County. He was promoted to First Sergeant on 26 May but reduced to Private on 26 September 1861. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 27 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the left arm in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His left arm was amputated. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 4 October 1862 but resigned due to his wound on 1 June 1863.

After the War

He married Sarah A. Hunt (b. 1846) in September 1866 and the first of their six children was born in Davidson County in 1868.
