A 21 year old farmer, he mustered as Private, Company B, 18th North Carolina Infantry on 3 May 1861 in Bladen County. He was wounded at Hanover Court House, VA on 27 May 1862.

He was mortally wounded in action near Shepherdstown, VA on 20 September 1862.

He died of wounds on 1 October 1862, place not given.
