A 20 year old farmer in Cabarrus County, he mustered as Private, Company B, 20th North Carolina Infantry on 18 April 1861 in Cabarrus County. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 October 1861 and Sergeant on 8 March 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.
