Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted in Robertson County as a Private in Company C, 4th Texas Infantry on 15 July 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was in hospitals in Richmond, VA until 15 October 1862, when he was furloughed. His right arm had been amputated and he did not return to duty.
After the War
By 1880 he was a guard and lived at the Milam County jail. He was postmaster of Cameron, TX at the time of his death in 1887.

He was one of 3 Barton brothers in Company C of the 4th Infantry. His brother Lem also lost his right arm at Sharpsburg. Francis Davis "Frank" Barton (1844-1900) was wounded at Gaines' Mill ('62) and Chickamauga, GA ('63).
He married Cassandra Emily "Cassie" Sneed (1845-1866) in 1864 and they had 1 or 2 children. He married again, Julia A Bass (1841-1899) in December 1869 and they had 5 or 6 more.
