Before Sharpsburg

He was elected member of the State Legislature in 1860. On 5 June 1861, age 24, from McDowell County, he was commissioned First Lieutenant, Company K, 22nd North Carolina Infantry in McDowell County. He was promoted to Captain on 6 September 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action near Shepherdstown, VA (now WV) on 20 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died at Fredericksburg, VA on 15 (or 30) November (or 1 December) 1862.
