Age 18, from Granville County, he mustered as Private, Company E, 23rd North Carolina Infantry on 5 June 1861 in Granville County. He was wounded in action at Seven Pines, VA on 31 May 1862 but returned to duty, date not given.

He was killed in action on 14 September 1862 at Fox's Gap on on South Mountain.
