Before Sharpsburg

A 19 year old farmer in Gaston County, he mustered as Private, Company H, 23rd North Carolina Infantry on 12 June 1861 in Gaston County. He was promoted to Sergeant on 10 May 1862. He was wounded at Seven Pines, VA on 31 May 1862 and returned to duty about 15 August.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 14 September 1862 at Fox's Gap on on South Mountain where he exhibited "extraordinary coolness and daring."

The rest of the War

He was discharged for disability on 12 March 1863.
