Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 30 year old jailor and blacksmith at Brutons, NC. He enlisted at Troy, NC on 27 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company C, 13th Regiment North Carolina Volunteers. They were re-designated the 23rd North Carolina Infantry in November 1861. He was detailed as a waggoner (teamster) from September through December and was denied an enlistment bonus for being "over the age of 35"(?) in April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his company in Maryland and was later mentioned by Brigadier General D.H. Hill for having "exhibited extraordinary coolness and daring" on the campaign. He was mortally wounded in action on 14 September 1862 at Fox's Gap on South Mountain and died the same day.
