Before Sharpsburg

Age 23, from Montgomery County, he mustered as Sergeant, Company C, 23rd North Carolina Infantry on 27 May 1861 in Montgomery County. He was commissioned 3rd Lieutenant on 16 April 1862. He was wounded at Seven Pined, VA on 31 May 1862 and returned to duty about 15 July.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He returned to duty about 15 November 1862. He was captured in action at Gettysburg, AP on 1 July 1863 and held at Fort Delaware briefly, then sent to Johnson's Island, OH. On 9 February 1864 he was transferred to Point Lookout, MD, then back to Fort Delaware on 23 June. He was sent to Hilton Head, SC on 20 August 1864 and to Fort Pulaski, GA on 20 October. Finally, he was transferred to Fort Delaware on 12 March 1865 and he died there of disease - chronic diarrhea - on 15 March 1865.
