Before Sharpsburg
A 16 year old farmer in Granville County, he mustered as Private, Company E, 23rd North Carolina Infantry on 5 June 1861 in Granville County. He was wounded at Gaines' Mill, VA on 27 June 1862 but returned to duty, date not given.

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was listed as absent wounded until he was discharged for being under-age on 19 December 1862.
