Age 18, from Edgecombe County, he mustered as Private, Company F, 30th North Carolina Infantry on 31 August 1861 in Edgecombe County. He was wounded in action at Malvern Hill, VA on 1 July 1862 but returned to duty, date not given.

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
