Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 17 year old student living with his family in Seguin, TX. He enlisted in New Orleans as a Private in Company D, 4th Texas Infantry on 27 February 1862.

On the Campaign

He was in action with his Company at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to 3rd Corporal on 1 November 1862 and to 5th Sergeant by January 1864. He was slightly wounded in the leg in the Wilderness, VA on 6 May 1864, was in Richmond hospitals to 28 July, then on furlough for 60 days. He was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
