In 1860 he was a 24 year old timber cutter living with his parents, 6 siblings, his maternal grandmother, and 3 slave children on their farm near Swainsboro in Emanuel County, GA. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant of Company K, 28th Georgia Infantry on 10 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
