From Chattooga County, he enlisted on 25 September (or 23 October) 1861 at Atlanta (or Subligna), GA and mustered as a Private in Company I, 35th Georgia Infantry. He was wounded in action at Seven Pines, VA on 31 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured at Frederick, MD on 12 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was wounded again, by a gunshot to his left arm in action at Jericho Ford, VA on 25 May 1864. He was captured at Hatcher's Run, VA on 25 March 1865 and was held at Point Lookout, MD until he took the oath of allegiance on 14 June 1865 and was released.
