He mustered as Private, Company E, 14th Virginia Infantry on 1 May 1861 at Boydton, VA, and was discharged 3 September. He then enlisted as Private, Company A, 3rd Virginia Cavalry on 4 October 1861.

He was slightly wounded at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was killed in action at Yellow Tavern, VA on 11 May 1864.
