Before Antietam

He mustered as Captain of Company D, 56th Pennsylvania Infantry on 15 October 1861.

On the Campaign

He assumed command of the 56th Pennsylvania Infantry as senior officer present when Lieutenant Colonel Hofmann took over the Brigade (2nd Brigade of the 1st Division, First Corps) on 14 or 15 September 1862.

On the 17th at Antietam, the 56th Pennsylvania and the brigade were held in reserve north of the Poffenberger farm to protect General Hooker's First Corps artillery.

The rest of the War

He resigned his commission on 25 March 1863.
