Before Sharpsburg

Son of a farmer, on the creation of Mitchell County, GA in 1858 he was appointed Tax Collector, and in 1860 he was the 24 year old Sheriff and lived at Camilla, GA. He enlisted there on 4 March 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company A, 51st Georgia Infantry. They were later renamed Company C. On 30 June 1862, at the resignation of Captain Andrew Cumbrie, all (or nearly all) of the Privates of his company petitioned President Jefferson Davis to appoint George Captain. He was, instead, commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 9 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
