Before Sharpsburg

From Newton County, he mustered as Private, Company H, 6th Georgia State Troops on 21 October 1861 and was discharged on 21 April 1862. He enlisted again, as a Private in Company E, 53rd Georgia Infantry on 3 May 1862 in Covington.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action and captured at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was paroled on 27 September 1862 but died of wounds near Sharpsburg, probably in a US Army field hospital, on about 11 October 1862.

His service from the Roster,1 as John F.M. Gassett, and his Compiled Service Records, US National Archives, online via fold3, as John M Gassett. His father's December 1862 claim for his back pay spells his name John M. Gaissert, and is also the source of his death date.
