Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was 19 years old, and lived with his father, a sawyer, mother, and 6 siblings in Johnstonville, Monroe County, GA. He mustered as Private, Company K, First (Ramsey's) Georgia Infantry on 18 June 1861 and was discharged 18 March 1862 in Augusta, GA. He enlisted again, at Forsyth, as a Private in Company K, 53rd Georgia Infantry on 6 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was listed as paroled on 27 September but died of wounds on 28 September 1862, probably in a US Army field hospital near Sharpsburg. His father Willis Tate filed for his final pay in February 1863.
