Before Sharpsburg
Age 20, he enlisted at Camp Clark in Guadalupe County as a Private in Company D, 4th Texas Infantry on 4 July 1861. He was appointed Sergeant Major of the regiment on 1 February 1862.
On the Campaign
He was in action with the regiment at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
On 2 October he was elected 2nd Lieutenant of Company D to date from 1 September 1862, and was promoted to First Lieutenant on 29 December. He was promoted again, to Captain, on 11 May 1863. On 8 December 1863 he was found disabled for further field service by lung disease, and was assigned as the Provost Marshall at Columbus, GA on 29 December. He was on that detail to at least August 1864, then was medically retired on 6 September 1864.
