Age 31, he mustered as Private, Company G, 103rd New York Infantry in New York City on 23 December 1861. He was transferred to Company D on 21 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in the right side of his back in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD but died there of gangrene from wounds on 21 November 1862 and was buried in St. John's Cemetery, Frederick.
