Age 18, he enlisted in New York City for three years and mustered as Private in Company B, 103rd New York Infantry on 15 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action and captured at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was exchanged 8 October 1862 and returned to duty. He was promoted to Corporal, date not given, reenlisted on 6 January 1864, and was promoted to Sergeant before October 1864. He transferred to the Battalion 14 March 1865 and mustered out with his Company on 7 December 1865 at City Point, VA.
